Interactive Brokers Overview

Interactive Brokers is the broker to evaluate when market access, margin rates, APIs and professional tooling matter more than simplicity. It is not the easiest brokerage for a beginner, but it remains one of the strongest platforms for active, international and multi-asset traders.

This review was refreshed on July 21, 2026 using Interactive Brokers' official commissions page. Current public pricing still distinguishes IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro, with $0 US stock and ETF commissions available on Lite for eligible US residents, tiered or fixed Pro stock pricing, options commissions generally shown from $0.15 to $0.65 per contract, and futures commissions shown from $0.25 to $0.85 per contract depending on schedule.

IBKR Lite and Pro are different decisions

IBKR Lite is the simpler entry point for eligible US residents who mainly trade US stocks and ETFs. It competes directly with mainstream zero-commission brokers and is easier to justify for casual investors.

IBKR Pro is the product active traders usually evaluate. It adds more direct pricing choices, advanced order routing and the full professional platform stack. The commission schedule is more complex, but the trade-off can be worth it for high-volume users, options traders, international investors and anyone who cares about routing and margin economics.

Use Interactive Brokers' official commissions page rather than a simplified broker comparison table. IBKR pricing is schedule-driven by product, region, exchange and plan.

Trader Workstation is powerful but unforgiving

Trader Workstation is one of the deepest retail-accessible trading platforms. It supports complex order entry, global markets, options tools, risk tools, scanners and API-adjacent workflows. The downside is usability. A new investor can open TWS and feel lost within minutes.

That is not a bug for the target user. IBKR is built for traders who need control and are willing to learn the interface. If the workflow is basic investing, compare Fidelity, Charles Schwab or Robinhood before choosing IBKR.

API access is a real advantage

Interactive Brokers remains one of the most important broker integrations for algorithmic and quantitative traders. Many research platforms, trading systems and internal tools support IBKR because it offers broad asset coverage and mature APIs.

API access does not make execution easy. Developers still need order validation, risk checks, connection monitoring, logging and reconciliation. A professional broker API is infrastructure, not a finished trading system.

Global access is the reason many traders stay

IBKR's strongest moat is breadth: stocks, ETFs, options, futures, bonds, funds, currencies and international market access from one account structure. That matters for traders who want to route outside a single US stock account or compare cross-market opportunities.

The cost is complexity. Account permissions, data subscriptions, exchange fees, tax reporting and product restrictions vary. Before funding the account, check the exact products and regions you intend to trade.

Our current assessment

Interactive Brokers is not the friendliest broker, but it is one of the most capable. Use it when you need global market access, strong margin economics, professional order tools or APIs. Skip it if you want the cleanest beginner experience and mostly buy US ETFs.
