How to choose a forex broker without over-trusting the spread headline

Forex broker pages are easy to make shallow because every broker can advertise tight spreads, fast platforms and global markets. The better question is whether the broker is appropriate for the account location, trade size, leverage rules and product type you actually need. A US trader comparing OANDA and FOREX.com is not making the same decision as an international CFD trader comparing IG Markets, Pepperstone, IC Markets or Saxo Bank.

Start with regulation and account eligibility before looking at platform features. In the US, retail forex access is narrower and the relevant shortlist is mostly broker-specific forex accounts rather than broad CFD supermarkets. Outside the US, CFD brokers may offer forex, indices, commodities, shares and crypto-style markets in one account, but that wider product menu also means leverage, overnight financing, negative balance rules and local investor protections can vary significantly.

The spread number matters, but it is not the full trading cost. Some brokers use spread-only pricing, some offer raw or core spreads plus commission, and some reserve lower effective pricing for high-volume or premium accounts. A trader who scalps EUR/USD needs to examine average spread during active hours, commission per notional amount, execution quality and slippage. A swing trader may care more about rollover, weekend gap handling, deposit/withdrawal reliability, research and whether the platform can alert cleanly when a setup forms.

Platform fit also matters. MetaTrader support is useful if you rely on expert advisors, custom indicators, or third-party scripts. TradingView integration is useful if your analysis already lives in TradingView and you want fewer context switches. Proprietary web and mobile platforms can be better for beginners when order tickets, watchlists, news and risk controls are clearer than a legacy terminal.

Source checks and buyer cautions

Current official checks show the main pricing pattern clearly. OANDA US describes spread-only and lower-spread commission-style account options, with margin rates and eligibility details that need to be checked directly. FOREX.com US publishes forex trading-cost pages with variable spreads and raw-pricing style commission information. Tastyfx/IG US shows account structures that can combine spread-only, zero-spread plus commission, or premium pricing. International IG pages also explain that forex CFD trading often embeds cost in the spread, while leverage and overnight funding remain separate considerations.

The practical rule: never choose a forex broker from a single "from 0.0 pips" claim. Read the account type, commission schedule, financing terms, execution policy, local regulator page and margin call policy. Forex is a leveraged product, and a page that does not make risk, cost and jurisdiction visible is not doing the user a favor.
